Today I am diving deeper into episode 2 of Museum Shop Edit, a series I started on Instagram in which I rate all of London’s museum gift shops on their art prints/postcards, stationery and souvenirs. Only one reel per museum was not enough, so this newsletter was born to share more details and links to my favourite finds. The museum shop we are exploring today was probably THE most requested under my videos: the V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum).
Art Prints / Postcards:
I loved their art prints and postcards collection, probably the best of all the museums I visited so far! They have a great selection of both classic-size postcards and kiss-cut postcards in the shape of the object portrayed. The quality is top-notch, so much so that I would totally feel comfortable mailing these postcards without an envelope.
They also offer a wide variety of art prints and frames, which makes it easy to bring home a ready-to-hang art print. My rating is then, of course, a 5/5.
My favourite finds from this category are:
-
African Marigold by William Morris – A2 poster print - £25
-
Barbara Goalen in evening dress in the Underground - From £15
-
Balenciaga Dress X-ray print by Nick Veasey - £50
-
Chintz roses and lilacs mini print - £3, now discounted to £1.50
-
Les Fureurs du Tango, fashion plate - £60
Stationery:
On their stationery, I am still in two minds. I gave it a 4/5 in my video, and while I stand by that, I still have a weird aftertaste in my mouth. They hold a great collection of notebooks, pencils and pens, but I found the graphics a bit outdated and not very memorable.
I did, however, love many of the greeting cards on sale, and some kiss-cut stickers.
My favourite finds from the category are:
-
William Morris Leicester writing set - £6.50
-
V&A pencil sharpener - £3.50
-
Black V&A eco pencil - £1.50
-
Blue magic pencil - £3
-
Watercolour Travel Set - £7.50
-
John Derian Sticker Book II - £30
Souvenirs:
Finally, the last category I am going to rate is souvenirs. They have quite a big collection of tote bags, of which I specifically love the big and colourful logo. I also love their magnets, simple but to the point and made of very high-quality material.
I rate their souvenirs collection 4/5.
Sadly, all the items I selected for this newsletter were not available in store, but you can find them online:
-
William Morris playing cards - £12.99
-
V&A English breakfast tea - £12
-
The London cat map tea towel - £12.99
-
The London dog map tea towel - £12.99
Final Rating:
All in all, browsing the V&A shop in person is a great experience. Their shop looks and feels like a retail store, not a souvenir shop tailored to tourists. It is a perfect extension of the museum, and for these reasons, my final rating is a 4/5.
